In my post yesterday, I talked about how we need to start being real with people. Especially when people are asking how you are doing. This is so hard to do. Especially for me. When I think about this topic, I can’t help but thinking about DC Talk and their song What if I Stumble. The song starts out with the famous Brennan Manning quote,
“The greatest single cause of atheism in the world today is Christians: who acknowledge Jesus with their lips, walk out the door, and deny Him by their lifestyle. That is what an unbelieving world simply finds unbelievable.”
I have always thought for years that this is because we have our masks that we wear. Just like the song alludes to, we have one mask for the people and one mask for the Lord. Which one is the real you? Which person does your friends know? Does anyone know the real you, no mask, just the real you, usually with ugly scars that life has given us showing?
I have been challenged of this, and since have challenged others to take of the mask, all of the masks, and find someone that you really trust and let them see the real you. I am blessed enough to have a few close friends in my life that I can take off my masks and be real with. Yes, sometimes it hurts, it is scary. When we take off our mask, we have to be real. We are vulnerable. But that is also when you can take the deepest breathes and breathe unhindered from the masks that we so offend hide behind. Set yourself free from the masks that are keeping you from close relationships with those around you.
