Here & Now

As I was painting the nursery yesterday I had a lot of time to think. Maybe too much time because my head starting hurting, or maybe that was just the paint fumes. I was thinking about the past, the present, and of course a lot about the future.

The tricky thing about thinking about the future is you can’t spend so much time trying to figure out the future that you miss the here and now. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard statements like these. “I can’t wait to graduate high school and move out, my parents are so annoying.” “I can’t wait to finish college and get out into the real world.” “I can’t wait to buy a house and have a home of my own.” “I can’t wait to get married.” “I can’t wait to have kids.” “I can’t wait to get a new job.” “I can’t wait to retire.”

Are you guilty of any of those? While all good things to have, you need to trust that they will all come in due time. How many of us now wishes they could go back to high school or college? Go back to the simple times of renting, sleeping in on a Saturday without kids crawling all over you? Planning ahead is good. We have to know what our next step is. But don’t miss the here and now.

If you’re a kid, still be a kid. If you’re a student, still be a student. If you’re a newlywed, still be a newlywed. Life moves fast enough without you rushing it. Be here. Be in the now.

  1. I think you are a dreamer. I am a dreamer too. I always have my mind thinking of the best way to do something. Dreaming about how amazing it would be if I could do this or that. I also realized I was missing out on the here and now.. While Dreaming about the there and then. It’s hard to find the balance.
